SURNAME DATABASE - November 2008

The Surname Database for the Cleveland Family History Society may be searched using the forms below.

The results of the search will show which members are researching a name and the areas and time periods of interest to them. Information on how to contact the member is given at the foot of the results page.

Chapman codes are used to identify the geographic areas for the members' interests.

Two types of search are possible:

  • Surname Search: Search for only the records for a particular surname for chosen areas.
  • Simple Listing: Show all records for the first letter of the surname for chosen areas.

Surname Search

  1. Select the area(s) that you wish to search. Multiple areas may be selected by holding the control key down while you click.
  2. Enter the surname.
  3. Choose whether you want the search to be an exact match, or if the search should return names that sound similar to the requested surname too.
  4. Press the Display Surnames button
Area: Remember to hold down the Control key if you wish to select more than one area at a time.
Surname:
Match: Exact Soundex
Near Vague

Simple Listing.

  1. Select the area(s) that you wish to search. Multiple areas may be selected by holding the control key down while you click.
  2. Select the first letter of the surname.
  3. Press the Display Interests button
Area: Remember to hold down the Control key if you wish to select more than one area at a time.
