LOCAL REGISTER OFFICES IN ENGLAND AND WALES

This list is intended to be used in conjunction with the accompanying listing of Registration Districts in England and Wales. It provides contact addresses for all the current register offices for anyone wishnig to order historical certificates of births, marriages and deaths in those areas back to 1837:

District — This is the name of the current registration district (2013). In a few cases where the historical records for a large district are known to be divided between two or more offices, and there is no centralised address, then the office locations are shown in parentheses, e.g. "Surrey (Guildford)".
Postal address, telephone, fax, email — The contact details specifically for people wishing to order certificates (which will not necessarily be applicable for people wanting to register current births and deaths, etc.). Fax and email addresses are not available for every office. The cost of calls to an 0845, 0345 or 0300 number may vary according to your telecommunications provider.
Cheques payable to — The organisation to which cheques or postal orders should be made out. This is usually either the local council, or "The Superintendent Registrar". Registrars can only accept cheques or money orders in British pounds.
Registrar's website — Follow the link given here to the section of the registrar's website concerning the ordering of historical births, marriages and deaths (or the nearest equivalent). Local council websites are notoriously liable to change, so the date we last accessed them is also shown.
Online indexes — Any known websites that contain indexes to some of the registrars' records.

While some registrars welcome personal enquirers or will take payment for certificates by telephone, others will only accept applications by post. Similarly, some offices aim to despatch certificates within 24 hours of receipt, while others may charge considerably more for a "priority" service. Some offices also charge an extra 'administration fee' to cover the cost of card transactions or return postage. You are strongly advised to consult the registrars' websites on these issues before contacting them. Please note that we are not responsible for the content of other websites.
