Ashton upon Mersey was a township in Bucklow Hundred (SJ 7792),
mainly in Ashton upon Mersey Parish (with a small part in Bowdon Parish), which
became a civil parish in 1866.
In 1936 the whole of Ashton upon Mersey was added to Sale
civil parish.
Including the hamlet of Woodhouses.
The population was 778 in 1801, 1174 in 1851, and 5563 in 1901.
CHURCHES AND CHAPELS
Ashton upon Mersey, St. Martin (C of E), Church Lane. An ancient parish church serving part of the township of Ashton upon Mersey, and the whole of Sale township. Registers of Baptisms 1636–1966, Marriages 1636–1947 and Burials 1636–1939 have been deposited at the Cheshire Record Office, where Bishop's Transcripts also survive from 1605.
Bowdon, St. Mary (C of E). The ancient parish church for those parts of the township which were not covered by St Martin (above).
Ashton upon Mersey, St. Mary Magdalene, Moss Lane. Built in 1872, becoming a separate parish in 1894. Registers of Baptisms from 1894 and Marriages from 1875 are still
at the church (no burials here)..
Ashton upon Mersey, Baptist Union Chapel, Ashton Lane. Built in 1875.
Ashton upon Mersey, Friends' Meeting House (Quakers), Park Road. Built in 1856. Some records are at the Cheshire Record Office.
Ashton upon Mersey, Independent Chapel, School Lane. Built in 1802. Registers 1799–1837 are at the Cheshire Record Office.
