Cheshire Towns & Parishes

BARNSTON

• A township in Woodchurch Parish, Wirral Hundred (SJ 2883). Transferred to the County of Merseyside in 1974.
• Includes the hamlets of Carnsdale and Whitby Common.
• The population was 129 in 1801, 239 in 1851, 522 in 1901 and 832 in 1951.

CHURCHES AND CHAPELS

• Woodchurch, Holy Cross (C of E). The ancient parish church for Barnston.
• Barnston, Christ Church (C of E). A separate parish from 1870, originally serving the township of Barnston but extended in 1880 to include Pensby. Registers of Baptisms 1871-1935 have been deposited at the Cheshire Record Office. Registers of Marriages from 1872 are still at the church (no burials here).
