Cheshire Towns & Parishes

CHORLEY (near Wilmslow)

• Chorley was a township in Wilmslow Parish, Macclesfield Hundred (SJ 8278), which became a civil parish in 1866.
• In 1894 the town of Alderley Edge and the hamlets of Belmont, Elm Grove and The Ryleys were transferred to the civil parish of Alderley Edge.
• Including the hamlets of Lindow, Lindow End and Row-of-Trees
• The population was 391 in 1801, 803 in 1851, 305 in 1901, and 396 in 1951.

CHURCHES AND CHAPELS

• Wilmslow, St. Bartholomew (C of E). The ancient parish church for Chorley.
• Chorley (Alderley Edge), St. Philip (C of E). The parish church since 1866.
• Lindow, St. John the Evangelist (C of E). Built in 1874, a separate parish from 1877 serving parts of Alderley Edge and Chorley. Registers of Baptisms from 1875, and Marriages and Burials from 1878 are held at the church. Bishop's Transcripts 1877–1903 (incomplete) are held at the Cheshire Record Office.
• Lindow, Methodist Chapel (New Connexion). Built in 1839, closed in 1970. Registers of baptisms 1891–1962 are at the Cheshire Record Office.
