- Chorlton by Backford was a township in Backford ancient parish, Wirral hundred (SJ 4072), which became a civil parish in 1866.
- The population was 68 in 1801, 68 in 1851, 86 in 1901, 113 in 1951, and 80 in 2001.
- In 2015 the civil parish was abolished to become part of Backford.
