Built in 1861 as a chapel to Thornton-le-Moors: St. Mary. In 1888 it became the district church for the townships of Dunham on the Hill and Hapsford (previously served by Thornton-le-Moors: St. Mary). The boundaries of "The District Chapelry of Saint Luke Dunham-on-the-Hill" were described in the London Gazette on 10 February 1888:
"All that part of the said parish of Thornton-le-Moors which is comprised within and is co-extensive with the limits of the two townships of Dunham-on-the-Hill and of Hapsford."
