STOCKPORT: St. George (Church of England)

Hempshaw Lane/Buxton Road.

Church History

Founded in 1897 as the district church for parts of the townships of Stockport and Bramhall (previously served by Stockport: St. Thomas). The boundaries of "The District Chapelry of Saint George, Stockport" were described in the London Gazette on 6 August 1897:

"All that part of the parish of Saint Thomas, Stockport, in the county of Chester, and in the diocese of Chester, which is comprised within and is bounded by an imaginary lline commencing at the point where the boundary which divides the parish of Cheadle, in the said county and diocese, from the said parish of Saint Thomas, Stockport, crosses the middle of Adswood-lane West, and extending thence first eastward then north-eastward and then again eastward along the middle of the said lane and Adswood-lane East for a distance of twenty-one chains or thereabouts to its junction with Bramhall-lane (Stockport) and extending thence north-eastward along the middle of the last-named lane for a distance of' six chains or thereabouts to its junction with the high road leading from Stockport to Buxton known as Buxton-road and extending thence north-eastward across the said high road to the south-western end of the wall forming the north-western boundary of Stockport Borough Cemetery and extending thence north-eastward along the said wall for a distance of seventeen chains or thereabouts to the point where the said north-western boundary of the said Cemetery crosses the middle of the stream called or known as Hempsaw Brook, and extending thence northward along the middle of the said stream for a distance of sixteen chains and a half or thereabouts (thereby passing the eastern boundary of the buildings known as the Hempshaw Brook Brewery) to a point at the centre of the bridge or culvert which carries Hempshaw-lane over-the said stream upon the boundary which divides the said parish of Saint Thomas Stockport from the paiish of Saint Mary Stockport, in the said county and diocese, and extending thence eastward along the last-mentioned boundary
(thereby following the middle of the last-named lane) to the point at the junction of the same lane with Love-lane now called Webb-lane where such boundary meets the boundary which divides the district of Hall-street, Stockport, in the county and diocese aforesaid, from the said parish of Saint Thomas, Stockport, and extending thence first eastward and then southward along the last-mentioned boundary (thereby following first the middle of the said Hempshaw-lane and then the middle of Dialstone-lane, and then the middle of the high
road from Stockport to Buxton known as Buxton-road aforesaid) to the point at the junction of such high road with Bramhall-lane (Hazelgrove) where such boundary meets the boundary which divides the new parish of Saint Thomas Norbury, in the county and diocese aforesaid from the said parish of Saint Thomas Stockport, and extending thence
first generally south-westward and then westward along the last-mentioned boundary thereby following first the middle of the Iast-named lane and then the middle of Mill-lane to a point at the centre of Mill Bridge which carries the said Mill-lane over the stream, called or known as Lady Brook and extending thence generally northwestward along the middle of the last-named stream for a distance of seventy-eight chains or thereabouts to the boundary which divides the said parish of Saint Thomas Stockport, from the new parish of All Saints Cheadle, Hulme, in the county and diocese aforesaid, and extending thence first north-westward and then alternately southwestward and north-westward along the last- described boundary (thereby continuing to follow the course of the said last-named stream to the point where the last-mentioned boundary meets the boundary which divides the said parish of Saint Thomas Stockport from the parish of Cheadle aforesaid) and extending thence generally north-eastward along the last-mentioned boundary to the firstly hereinbefore mentioned point in the middle of Adswood-lane West aforesaid where the said imaginary line commenced."

The district was affected by the following boundary alterations:

• 1937 December 24 — extended when the following area was transferred from Cheadle: St. Mary: "All that portion of the Parish of Cheadle, in the said County and Diocese, which is bounded upon the east partly by the said Parish of Saint George, Stockport, and partly by the New Parish of Saint Thomas, Stockport, upon the north partly by the New Parish of Saint  Mark, Stockport, and partly by the New Parish of Saint Augustine, Brinksway, all in the said County and Diocese, and upon the remaining side, that is to say, upon the southwest, by an imaginary line commencing upon the boundary which divides the said New Parish of Saint Augustine, Brinksway, from the said Parish of Cheadle, at the centre of the bridge which carries the Stockport and Cheadle Branch Line of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway across the New Mills and Heaton Mersey Line of the same railway, and extending thence south- eastward along the middle of the last mentioned line of railway for a distance of 1 mile and 16 chains or thereabouts to the boundary which divides the said Parish of Cheadle from the said New Parish of Saint George, Stockport"
