Church History

An ancient parish church, originally serving the townships of Bramhall, Bredbury, Brinnington, Disley, Dukinfield, Hyde, Marple, Norbury, Offerton, Romiley, Stockport, Stockport Etchells, Torkington and Werneth, and a small part of the township of Northen Etchells..

The district was affected by the following boundary changes:

1839 — reduced when part of the township of Stockport was transferred to Stockport: St. Peter.
1839 — reduced when the townships of Bramhall and Stockport Etchells, and part of the township of Stockport, were transferred to Stockport: St. Thomas.
1841 May 24 — reduced when the township of Werneth was transferred to Werneth: St. Paul.
1843 January 10 — reduced when the township of Dukinfield was transferred to Dukinfield: St. John the Evangelist.
1843 January 10 — reduced when the township of Hyde was transferred to Hyde: St. George
1843 January 10 — reduced when the township of Norbury was transferred to Norbury: St. Thomas.
1844 June 3 — reduced when part of the township of Brinnington was transferred to Portwood: St. Paul.
1846 September 8 — reduced when the township of Bredbury was transferred to Bredbury: St. Mark.
1852 January 9 — enlarged to include an area lying on the east side of Windmill Street transferred from Stockport: St. Matthew .
1860 October 30 — reduced when parts of the township of Marple and Torkington were transferred to High Lane: St. Thomas.
1870 December 22 — reduced when part of the township of Marple was transferred to Low Marple: St. Martin.
1876 May 9 — reduced when part of the township of Marple was transferred to Marple: All Saints.
1876 October 27 — reduced when part of the township of Romiley was transferred to Chadkirk: St. Chad.
1877 March 27 — reduced when the remainingpart of the township of Romiley was transferred to Werneth: St. Paul.
1878 August 23 — reduced when the remaining part of the township of Torkington was transferred to Norbury: St. Thomas
1893 July 21 — reduced when the township of Offerton and part of the townshp of Stockport was transferred to Stockport: St. Alban.
1913 October 14 — reduced when the township of Disley was transferred to Disley: St. Mary the Virgin.
1963 October 22 — reduced when an area was transferred to Wythenshawe: The William Temple Church (in the diocese of Manchester).
