Grappenhall was a township in Grappenhall Parish, Bucklow Hundred (SJ
6486), which became a civil parish in 1866.
In 1933 its boundary with Lancashire was altered
to follow the centre of the Manchester Ship Canal.
In 1936
Grappenhall was extended to include Thelwall, and a small part of Grappenhall was transferred to Stockton
Heath.
Including the hamlet of Highfields.
The population was 338 in 1801, 708 in 1851, 987 in 1901, and 5655 in 1951.
