GREAT SUTTON

• Great Sutton was a township in Eastham ancient parish, Wirral hundred (SJ 3775), which became a civil parish in 1866.
• The civil parish was abolished in 1950 to become part of Ellesmere Port.
• It included the hamlets of Backford Cross (part) and Sutton Green.
• The population was 153 in 1801, 203 in 1851, and 397 in 1901.

Boundary Changes

• 1889 March 24 — Lost a detached part to Overpool (5 acres, pop. 0 in 1891)
• 1950 April 1 — Abolished and incorporated into Ellesmere Port (1151 acres, pop. 662 in 1931)

• Eastham: St. Mary (Church of England). The ancient parish church for the township of Great Sutton.
• Great Sutton: St. John the Evangelist (Church of England). Built in 1879 as a chapel to Eastham: St. Mary, becoming the district church for Great Sutton in 1880.
• Great Sutton: St. Saviour (Roman Catholic)
