SALE

• Sale was a township in Ashton upon Mersey Parish, Bucklow Hundred (SJ 8091), which became a civil parish in 1866.
• In 1936 the whole of Ashton upon Mersey was added to Sale.
• Since 1974 Sale has been part of the county of Greater Manchester.
• Including the hamlets of Cross Street and Sale Moor.
• The population was 819 in 1801, 1720 in 1851, 12088 in 1901, and 43168 in 1951.

CHURCHES AND CHAPELS

• Ashton upon Mersey, St. Martin (C of E). The ancient parish church for Sale.
• Sale, St. Anne (C of E). Church Road. Built in 1854, becoming the parish church for Sale in 1856. Registers of Baptisms 1856–2000 and Marriages 1857–2001 have been deposited at the Cheshire Record Office (no burials). See also the church history web-site.
• Baguley, St. John the Divine (C of E). Serving a small part of Sale since 1867.
• Sale, St. Paul (C of E). Springfield Road. A separate parish from 1884, serving part of Sale. Registers of Baptisms from 1881 and Marriages from 1885 are held at the church.
• Sale, St. Joseph (Roman Catholic), Hope Road. Founded 1866, the present church was Built in 1884. Registers of baptisms 1866–1961, marriages 1870–1984 and burials 1905–1988 have been deposited at the Cheshire Record Office.
• Sale, St. Francis (C of E). Budworth Road. A chapel to St. Anne. Registers of Baptisms 1963–2003 have been deposited at the Cheshire Record Office (no marriages or burials).
• Sale, Baptist Union Chapel, Raglan Road/Ashton Lane. Built in 1875.
• Sale, Methodist Church (Primitive), Northenden Road. Built in 1873.
• Sale, Methodist Church (Primitive), Market Street. Registers of marriages 1913–1960 are at Manchester Central Library.
• Sale, Methodist Church (Wesleyan), Northenden Road. Built in 1875.
• Sale, Methodist Church (Wesleyan), School Road. Built in 1887.
• Sale, Presbyterian Church, Northenden Road. Built in 1874.
• Sale, Unitarian Chapel, Old Cross Street/Chapel Road.
• Sale, United Reformed Church (Independent/Congregational), Montague Road. Founded 1805, Built in 1852.
