Smallwood was a township in Astbury ancient parish, Northwich hundred
(SJ 8060), which became a civil parish in 1866.
It includes the hamlets of Brookhouse Green, Four Lane Ends (part), Martin's
Moss, Mirian Heath, Mossend, Moss Mere, Overton Green, Pool Lane End, Rue Moss,
Simms Green, Spen Green, Spen Moss and Wallhill.
The population was 492 in 1801, 619 in 1851, 530 in 1901, and 585 in 1951.

Astbury: St. Mary (Church of England). The ancient parish
church for the township of Smallwood.
Smallwood: St. John the Baptist (Church of England).
Built in 1845 as a chapel to Astbury: St. Mary, becoming the district church
for Smallwood in 1846.
Smallwood, Methodist Chapel (Wesleyan). Founded in 1811. Registers 1920-1976
are at the Cheshire Record Office.
