Since 1974 it has been an unparished area in the county of Greater
Manchester.
It includes the hamlets of Bower Fold, Castle Hall, Cocker Hill, Copley, Fern
Bank, Higher Hydegreen, Hydes, Millbrook, Ridge Hill, Souracre, Sun Green and
Woodlands.
The population was 27673 in 1901, and 22541 in 1951.
1894 — Created from the whole of
Stayley (pop. 8570 in 1901), and the parts in Stalybridge Municipal Borough of Ashton
under Lyne, Lancashire (pop. 7402 in 1901), Dukinfield
(pop. 11701 in 1901) and
1936 April 1 — Gained part of Matley (58 acres,
pop. 147 in 1931)
Stalybridge: Old St. George (Church of England), Cocker Hill. Created a separate
parish in 1798 from part of Ashton under Lyne township (Lancashire). Registers
