TINTWISTLE

Tintwistle was a township in Mottram-in-Longdendale ancient parish, Macclesfield hundred (SK 0297), which became a civil parish in 1866.
Since 1974 it has been part of the county of Derbyshire.
It includes the hamlets of Arnfield and Woodhead.
The population was 1021 in 1801, 3027 in 1851, 1622 in 1901, and 1364 in 1951.

Mottram In Longdendale: St. Michael (Church of England). The ancient parish church for the township of Tintwistle.
Woodhead: St. James (Church of England). Founded in 1724 as a chapel to Mottram in Longdendale: St. Michael, becoming a district church for part of Tintwistle in 1840.
Tintwistle: Christ Church (Church of England). The district church for part of Tintwistle from 1836.
Tintwistle, Ebenezer Methodist Chapel (Wesleyan), Old Road. Built in 1830. Registers of baptisms 1839-1956 are at Manchester Central Library.
Tintwistle, United Reformed Church (Independent/Congregational). Founded in 1688. Registers 1747-1837 are at Manchester Central Library.
