Upton by Chester was a township in the ancient parishes of Chester: St. Mary on the Hill
and Chester: St. Oswald,
Broxton hundred (SJ 4169), which became a civil parish in 1866.
It includes the hamlet of Upton Heath.
The population was 173 in 1801, 555 in 1851, 1769 in 1901, and 6343 in 1951.

(Church of England). Built in 1872 as a chapel to Chester: St. Oswald,
which it succeeded as the district church in 1881.
Upton: Holy Ascension (Church of England).
Built in 1854 as a chapel to Chester: St. Mary on the Hill, becoming the
district church for Upton by Chester in 1882.
Upton, United Reformed Church (Independent/Congregational), Heath Road.
Built in 1860, rebuilt in 1900.
