Some Marriage Entries from Boyds Index for Essex
Transcribed by Brian Parsons

Boyd's Marriage Index consists of 533 typewritten volumes of English marriages for the period 1538 to 1837. There are approximately 7 million entries compiled from printed and typescripted transcripts of parish registers, bishop's transcripts, marriage licenses, and some private sources. The Index covers 4200 parishes in 16 counties. However, this is less than 16% of all English marriages for the period , and only about one third of the parishes are in the Index. Coverage by county is uneven, some counties including more parishes than others.
Percival Boyd and his associates carried out the work between 1925 and Boyd's death in 1955. The original Index is held at the Society of Genealogists, and it has been copied onto microfiche by the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, and copies of this copy distributed to major libraries around the world. Microfiche copies of parts of the Index of interest to individuals can be obtained at minimal cost through the normal loan services of the Family History Library network.
The microfilm publication consists of three series. Series One is arranged by county, by brides and grooms. Series Two is arranged in phonetic name order by brides and grooms. Series Three was made after Boyd's death by the staff of the Genealogical Society in Salt Lake City and is arranged in strict alphabetic order, again by brides and grooms. Series Two and Three are often referred to as the Miscellaneous Series. Series Three contains more counties and over one million additional entries than are included in the First Series.
These are entries from look-ups which I have gradually consolidated into a file. They are alphabetical, but not strictly chronological. It is worth remembering that when Boyd made his Index he employed his own soundex system, so surnames are not always as they may appear in the original parish record. e.g. Wright becomes Right; Philips becomes Filips etc. For spellings and other details of the wedding which may (or may not) occur in the original church record you will have to consult that record. There are some errors in the Boyd's Index and information should always be checked against the original sources.
