Welcome to the York's Archbishops Registers database. This website provides free access to over 21,500 images of registers produced by the Archbishops of York between 1225 and 1650. Since 2015, we have been working on a series of projects to index the entries in the registers, to make them more accessible to a wider audience. This work is still ongoing – you can find out more about our projects, funders and how we’re doing on our About Us page.

In 2019, as part of The Northern Way project, we partnered with The National Archives (UK) to index items from their collections relating to the York Archbishops between 1304 and 1405. You can now find those indexes on this site, too.

You can browse digital images of our original Archbishops Registers, or browse the index terms. Alternatively, you can search the 26117 indexed entries we’ve completed to date, using the search box above or our advanced search page (where you can also find more detailed information to help you get the best out of the site). We will continue to add additional information and index entries over the coming years, so please do check back to see what’s new.

On this site you can also find background information about the registers and the context in which they were created. Additionally, you’ll find a range of Further Resources, including presentations and a reading list, which highlight some of the many topics you can find in the records. To keep up to date with what’s happening, follow our social media accounts.

We value your feedback about the site, so if you have any comments or issues, please do let us know by contacting borthwick-institute@york.ac.uk for queries about the site content or the archives themselves, or dti-group@york.ac.uk for technical queries.
