BARNFATHER CENTRAL
WELCOME TO BARNFATHER CENTRAL

PLEASE NOTE

If you are viewing this website in a browser other than either Internet Explorer or Safari, some of the information here may be somewhat skewed.   I regret this inconvenience and have determined that the only real fix would be to relocate the website, which I may do at some point in the future.

My name is Lee Bridge Cognetta. I am one of many Barnfather descendants who have been researching the Barnfather name for several years now.

I conduct a 'One Name Study' of the surnames BARNFATHER, BAIRNSFATHER & BANFATHER that is registered with The Guild of One Name Studies (GOONS).

Although this website is devoted to the surname Barnfather, I am always happy to hear from Bairnsfather and Banfather descendants.  As you will see in the information about our DNA study on the Bulletin Board page, it certainly appears that we are all related!

I have created this site to help you find your link to the many other Barnfathers who are also researching their roots. You will find family trees for Barnfather families from many locations in England, Australia, the US and Canada.

Information here will change from time to time, so do check back often.

If you have comments or questions about this website or about your Barnfather heritage, please email me or leave a note on the Guestbook found at the bottom of the BULLETIN BOARD page.  I look forward to hearing from you.

OUR CRUMBLING HERITAGE
During the 2009 Barnfather Reunion, we spent some time in the graveyard at Lanercost Abbey.  It is appalling to see how much deterioration of the headstones has taken place in the time since the first Reunion in 2000.  Fortunately, many of the headstones have been transcribed and indexed, but these treasures are rapidly being lost to us.  The photo to the right shows the condition of the headstone of John Barnfather of Butterburn, who died in 1828.

For more information on this matter, please visit the CAN YOU HELP page using the link above.

THE BARNFATHER DNA PROJECT

Are the BARNFATHERS descended from the Norwegian Vikings? From the Danish Vikings? From both??

Is there a connection among the BARNFATHERS, BAIRNSFATHERS and BANFATHERS?

Modern technology now makes it possible for us to find answers to these questions and I am pleased to say that we have had some eager volunteers to help us get to the bottom of this matter.

The BARNFATHER VIKING DNA PROJECT took place several years ago with the assistance of representatives of the BARNFATHER, BAIRNSFATHER and BANFATHER families and in conjunction with the Viking DNA studies then being conducted by University College London.

THE fascinating results can be seen on the BULLETIN BOARD PAGE.  Just follow the link above.

BARNFATHER 2011
The latest Barnfather family reunion was held at Beverley, Yorkshire, and was a wonderful event.  We enjoyed exploring Beverley and Hull and our Gala Dinner at Rowley Manor was extraordinary.  We were delighted to have members of the Baronsfeather/Bairnsfather family with us.
