Registration Districts in Cheshire

REGISTRATION DISTRICTS IN CHESHIRE

The list below shows the civil registration districts in Cheshire since 1837. The same districts were used to compile the census returns for the years 1851 to 1921.

For the purposes of these pages, "Cheshire" refers to:

the ancient county of Chester (1837–89), including the city of Chester.
the administrative county of Chester (1889–1974), with the county boroughs of Birkenhead (1889–74), Chester (1889–74), Stockport (1889–74) and Wallasey (1913–74).
the non-metropolitan county of Cheshire (1974–2009).
the unitary authorities of Cheshire East (from 2009), Cheshire West & Chester (from 2009), Halton (from 1998) and Warrington (from 1998).

Bucklow	Cheshire	1898	1974	Created 1.10.1898 by renaming Altrincham registration district. Abolished 1.4.1974 and divided between Trafford, Macclesfield, Warrington and Manchester registration districts.
Cheshire	Cheshire	2007	2009	Created 1.7.2007 from Cheshire Central, Cheshire East and Cheshire West registration districts. Abolished 1.4.2009 and divided between Cheshire East and Cheshire West & Chester registration districts.
Cheshire Central	Cheshire	1998	2007	Created 1.4.1998 from South Cheshire and Vale Royal registration districts. Abolished 1.7.2007 and added to Cheshire registration district.
Cheshire East	Cheshire	1998	2007	Created 1.4.1998 from Macclesfield and South Cheshire registration districts. Abolished 1.7.2007 and added to Cheshire registration district.
Cheshire East	Cheshire	2009		Created 1.4.2009 out of Cheshire registration district.
Cheshire West	Cheshire	1998	2007	Created 1.4.1998 by renaming Chester & Ellesmere Port registration district. Abolished 1.7.2007 and added to Cheshire registration district.
Cheshire West & Chester	Cheshire	2009		Created 1.4.2009 out of Cheshire registration district.
Chester	Cheshire	1870	1974	Created 1.1.1870 by renaming Great Boughton registration district. Abolished 1.4.1974 and added to Chester & Ellesmere Port registration district.
Chester & Ellesmere Port	Cheshire	1974	1998	Created 1.4.1974 out of Chester, West Cheshire and Wirral registration districts. Renamed 1.4.1998 to become Cheshire West registration district.
Congleton	Cheshire	1837	1937	Abolished 1.4.1937 and divided between Crewe, Macclesfield and Northwich registration districts.
Congleton & Crewe	Cheshire	1974	1991	Created 1.4.1974 out of Crewe, Macclesfield and Northwich registration districts. Renamed 1.7.1991 to become South Cheshire registration district.
Crewe	Cheshire	1937	1974	Created 1.4.1937 out of Nantwich, Congleton, Chester and Northwich registration districts. Abolished 1.4.1974 and added to Congleton & Crewe registration district.
Great Boughton	Cheshire	1837	1870	Renamed 1.1.1870 to become Chester registration district.
Halton	Cheshire	1974		Created 1.4.1974 out of Widnes and Runcorn registration districts.
Hayfield	Derbyshire	1838	1937	Created 20.1.1838 out of High Peak registration district. Partly in Cheshire until 1.4.1937.
High Peak	Derbyshire	1837	1838	Abolished 20.1.1838 and divided between Chapel-en-le-Frith and Hayfield registration districts.
Hyde	Cheshire	1937	1974	Created 1.4.1937 out of Ashton under Lyne and Stockport registration districts. Abolished 1.4.1974 and divided between Tameside and High Peak registration districts.
Macclesfield	Cheshire	1837	1998	Abolished 1.4.1998 and added to Cheshire East registration district.
Market Drayton	Shropshire	1837	1895	Partly in Cheshire until 30.9.1895.
Nantwich	Cheshire	1837	1937	Abolished 1.4.1937 and divided between Crewe and West Cheshire registration districts.
North East Cheshire	Cheshire	1937	1974	Created 1.4.1937 out of Stockport, Hayfield, Glossop and Macclesfield registration districts. Abolished 1.4.1974 and divided between Stockport and Macclesfield registration districts.
Northwich	Cheshire	1837	1974	Abolished 1.4.1974 and divided between Vale Royal and Congleton & Crewe registration districts.
Runcorn	Cheshire	1837	1974	Abolished 1.4.1974 and divided between Halton, Warrington and Vale Royal registration districts.
South Cheshire	Cheshire	1991	1998	Created 1.7.1991 from Congleton & Crewe registration district. Abolished 1.4.1998 and divided between Cheshire Central and Cheshire East registration districts.
Stockport	Cheshire	1837	1974	Transferred to Greater Manchester on 1.4.1974.
Vale Royal	Cheshire	1974	1998	Created 1.4.1974 out of Northwich and Runcorn registration districts. Abolished 1.4.1998 and added to Cheshire Central registration district.
Wallasey	Cheshire	1936	1974	Created 1.1.1936 out of Birkenhead and Wirral registration districts. Transferred to Merseyside on 1.4.1974.
Warrington	Lancashire	1845	1895	Partly in Cheshire from 21.10.1845 until 1.7.1895.
Warrington	Cheshire	1974		Transferred from Lancashire on 1.4.1974.
West Cheshire	Cheshire	1937	1974	Created 1.4.1937 out of Chester, Wirral and Nantwich registration districts. Abolished 1.4.1974 and added to Chester & Ellesmere Port registration district.
Whitchurch	Shropshire	1853	1935	Created 4.4.1853 out of Wem, Wrexham, Nantwich, Ellesmere and Great Boughton registration districts. Partly in Cheshire until 1.10.1935.
Wirral	Cheshire	1837	1974	Abolished 1.4.1974 and divided between Birkenhead and Chester & Ellesmere Port registration districts.
Wrexham	Denbighshire	1837	1896	Partly in Cheshire until 1.11.1896.
