REGISTRATION DISTRICTS IN CUMBERLAND

The list below shows the civil registration districts in Cumberland between 1837 and 1974. The same districts were used to compile the census returns for the years 1851 to 1921.

For the purposes of these pages, "Cumberland" refers to:

the ancient county of Cumberland (1837–89)
the administrative county of Cumberland (1889–1974), with the county borough of Carlisle (1915–74).

The county of Cumberland was abolished on 1.4.1974 and added to the county of Cumbria.

Millom	Cumberland	1939	1974	Created 1.4.1939 out of Bootle and Whitehaven registration districts. Transferred to Cumbria on 1.4.1974.
Penrith	Cumberland	1837	1974	Transferred to Cumbria on 1.4.1974.
